Werlitsch Ex Vero II 2021
WerlitschGrape: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay
Vintage: 2021
Type: Orange
This skin-contact white wine is an artisanal blend of sauvignon blanc and chardonnay from mid-slope biodynamic parcels. Winemaker Ewald Tscheppe utilizes low-intervention protocols on the steep limestone marl terraces, locally known as opok soils. The hand-picked grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation with native wild yeasts and an extended skin maceration inside old wooden vats. The wine matures naturally for several months in large neutral oak barrels to integrate its structural elements.
It pours a majestic amber color, releasing complex aromas of golden apple, pear, quince, and fresh citrus zest. On the palate, the deeply structured frame balances a rich, texturally dense mouthfeel with a firm line of fine-grained tannins. Savory layers of white flowers, wet stone, and subtle herbal nuances fold smoothly into the fruit core. A clean thread of alpine acidity runs through the center, maintaining excellent freshness. It finishes long, dry, and persistent.
Werlitsch is Brigitte and Ewald Tscheppe's biodynamic estate in southern Styria, tucked near the Slovenian border on the region's opok soils of calcareous marl. Ewald moved away from the simple, aromatic white wines often associated with Styria and instead built a deeply natural, site-focused project around Sauvignon Blanc, Morillon, Welschriesling and blends such as the Ex Vero series. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, the wines ferment spontaneously, age for long periods on the lees and are bottled unfined, unfiltered and often without sulfur. They are energetic, mineral and contemplative, showing Styria as a place of depth rather than mere freshness.
