Weingut Moric Hausmarke Super Natural 2023
MoricGrape: Grüner Veltliner, Chardonnay
Vintage: 2023
Type: White
This white wine is an un-oaked field blend composed mostly of grüner veltliner with a small portion of chardonnay from Burgenland. Winemaker Roland Velich utilizes low-intervention protocols on his sustainably managed vineyards to produce an entry-level cuvée with deep complexity. The hand-picked grapes are pressed softly and undergo a completely spontaneous fermentation driven entirely by native wild yeasts in steel vats. The liquid matures on its fine lees to safeguard pure regional transparency.
It pours a bright straw color, releasing a highly seductive nose of citrus, green apple, and fresh fennel. On the palate, the medium-bodied frame is exceptionally fresh and lively, presenting a far cry from stereotypical fruit-forward white expressions. Savory layers of stone fruit and a subtle herbaceous tension develop nicely as the fluid mouthfeel expands. A clean line of natural acidity cuts right through the center, keeping the structure focused. It concludes bone-dry.
Moric is Roland Velich's project in Burgenland, and one of the estates most responsible for restoring Blaufrankisch to serious conversation. Instead of treating the grape as a simple, fruit-driven red, Velich approached it with the sensitivity usually reserved for Burgundy: old vines, specific villages, restrained extraction and aging that emphasizes structure over gloss. The wines come from places such as Lutzmannsburg and Neckenmarkt, where limestone, schist and old vine material give Blaufrankisch depth, spice and nerve. Moric's best bottles are savory and transparent, proving that Austria's great red grape can be both intellectual and deeply pleasurable.
