Grape: Sciaccarellu, Minustellu, Carcajolo Nero
Vintage: 2021
Type: Red

This low-intervention red wine is a traditional blend combining native varieties sciaccarellu, minustellu, and carcajolo nero. Sourced from organically managed vineyards rooted in sandy granite soils, the hand-picked fruit carries an distinctive natural concentration. Winemaker Gérard Courrèges utilizes a lengthy twenty-eight month aging process in neutral oak demi-muids to allow the elements to assemble naturally. This disciplined cellar protocol avoids standard commercial styling to produce a wine that balances structural power with fruit finesse.

It pours a dark ruby color with purple edges, opening with complex aromas of dark plum, wild raspberry, and dried Mediterranean herbs. A medium-bodied frame balances a velvety mouthfeel with a firm line of fine-grained tannins. Savory flavors of black currant and cherry blend smoothly with secondary notes of sweet spice and woodsmoke. A crisp line of granite acidity runs through the mid-palate, keeping the texture fresh. It finishes long and dry, leaving a savory trace.

Domaine de Vaccelli is a family-run winery located in the southern part of the Ajaccio appellation on the island of Corsica. Owned by the Courrèges family, the estate is renowned for producing elegant, terroir-driven wines from native Corsican grapes. Winemaker Gérard Courrèges, who took over from his father in 2000, has elevated the winery to international recognition. The estate has been farmed organically since 2008 and received organic certification in 2019. All vineyard work is done by hand. Gérard has integrated modern techniques while preserving tradition, using concrete eggs and large demi-muids (600-liter barrels) for fermentation and aging to allow the terroir to shine.
