Giuseppe Quintarelli Bianco Secco Ca' del Merlo Veneto IGT 2022: It is no surprise that this legendary estate, though more renowned for its powerhouse, appassimento-style reds, should also produce a stunning (though rarely seen) white. A blend of 80% Garganega and a medley of other varieties, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Trebbiano Toscano, and the rare local variety called Saorin that are partially aged in barrel, this is a bottle full of luscious and textural surprises. Powerfully floral and spicy, with lemon and grapefruit zest and orchard blossoms giving way to peach and spiced tangerine, wild fennel, and mint. The palate skews citric and luscious – there's dynamic tension here – driven by Cara Cara orange and tropical melon pocked by fresh vanilla pod and more of that tangy, lactic richness. This wine dances between the fresh and bright and the round and rich with nimble feet.
E. Pira & Figli Chiara Boschis Via Nuova Barolo 2018: Chiara is an artisan grower whose philosophy is to craft wines that combine the extraordinary power of Barolo with approachability, balance, intense aromatics, and elegance. This equilibrium is achieved through strict vineyard management (all work is carried out manually), careful selection, organic farming practices, and meticulous vinification techniques that favor a gentle touch, allowing the grapes to express their true character. Chiara is a farmer first. She then unites the best of traditional and modern winemaking techniques in a continuous endeavor to consistently produce high-quality wines representative of their heritage. The 2018 Barolo Via Nuova is marked by palpable brightness and tension that lend energy. Like all of these wines, the 2018 is restrained in feel, but all the elements are so well balanced. Freshly cut flowers, mint, crushed rocks, chalk, and white pepper, give the Via Nuova notable energy. Intense veins of supporting tannin and minerality provide the backbone."
