Scar of the Sea Coferment Pinot Gris Pinot Noir Bassi Wine 2025
Scar of the SeaGrape: Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir
Vintage: 2025
Type: Orange / Rosé
Sourced from the extreme, sandstone slopes of the biodynamically farmed Bassi Vineyard just one mile from the Pacific Ocean, this cuvée completely blurs the lines between white and red wine. Winemaker Mikey Giugni harvests the Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir simultaneously, destemming the fruit into open-top fermenters where the two varieties macerate together on their skins for twelve days. This co-fermentation allows the skins of both clones to share tannins, color, and texture as one cohesive unit rather than a post-press blend. Following a brief aging period in old neutral French oak barrels, it stands as a brilliant, experimental snapshot of maritime terroir.
In the glass, it glows with a striking, hazy copper-pink hue reminiscent of an autumnal sunset. The aromatics are remarkably expressive, jumping forward with notes of wild strawberry, blood orange zest, dried hibiscus, and a subtle hint of damp earth. On the palate, the skin contact provides a light, "crystalline" grip of fine-grained tannin that anchors the wine's slippery, fluid texture. Bracing ocean acidity slices right through the crunchy red fruit profile, maintaining an effortless weightlessness. The finish is intensely dry and thirst-quenching, leaving behind a lingering wave of coastal salinity and crushed sea stones.
Scar of the Sea is the coastal California project of Mikey and Gina Giugni, focused on vineyards shaped by ocean influence, old vines and patient farming. Based on the Central Coast, the winery works with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Gamay and cider apples from sites in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and beyond. The name points to the Pacific's constant mark on the landscape: fog, wind, salt and cool light. Fermentations are native, extraction is gentle and the wines favor energy over weight. Scar of the Sea helped define a more transparent, maritime style for modern California wine.
