Grape: Chardonnay, Pinot Gris
Vintage: 2024
Type: Rosé

This low-intervention dry rosé is a field co-fermentation combining sixty-five percent pinot gris and thirty-five percent chardonnay from the Bassi Vineyard. The vines grow above a sandstone quarry overlooking the Pacific Ocean, developing high natural acidity from the marine breezes. Winemaker Mikey Giugni destems the pinot gris and blends it directly with fresh chardonnay juice to ferment natively in neutral barrels. It ages on its lees for eight months in old French oak before an unfined and unfiltered bottling.

It glows with a copper-pink hue, releasing a fragrant nose of wild strawberry, fresh pear, and a hint of sea spray. A light-to-medium frame balances crisp orchard fruit flavors with an underlying chiseled mineral undercurrent. A snappy wave of natural acidity cuts right through the slightly waxy texture, keeping the mouthfeel thoroughly refreshed. Subtle notes of blood orange peel and wild thyme add depth across the textured center. It finishes bone-dry.

Scar of the Sea is the coastal California project of Mikey and Gina Giugni, focused on vineyards shaped by ocean influence, old vines and patient farming. Based on the Central Coast, the winery works with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Gamay and cider apples from sites in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and beyond. The name points to the Pacific's constant mark on the landscape: fog, wind, salt and cool light. Fermentations are native, extraction is gentle and the wines favor energy over weight. Scar of the Sea helped define a more transparent, maritime style for modern California wine.
