Ronchi di Cialla Schioppettino 2015
Ronchi di CiallaGrape: Schioppettino
Vintage: 2015
Type: Red
This red wine is a pure varietal expression of the native schioppettino grape sourced from the historic single-vineyard Cru-Monopole schioppettino di Cialla. The Rapuzzi family manages the old vines organically on pre-alpine terraces composed of complex marl and sandstone soils. The hand-harvested fruit undergoes a traditional low-intervention vinification, featuring a spontaneous fermentation driven by native wild vineyard yeasts inside neutral wooden casks. The wine matures in used oak barrels to allow the structural components to settle naturally.
It displays a bright ruby color, releasing clean, expressive aromas of crushed white pepper, dark cherries, and wild red berries. A sleek, medium-bodied frame balances focused red fruit flavors with an underlying chiseled mineral core. Fine-grained, silky tannins provide a smooth structural grip that coordinates nicely across the fluid mouthfeel without feeling heavy. A clean thread of natural acidity cuts through the center, keeping the palate refreshed. It finishes long, dry, and persistent.
Ronchi di Cialla is the Rapuzzi family's estate in the secluded Cialla Valley of Friuli's Colli Orientali. Founded in the 1970s, the family became crucial to the survival of Schioppettino, helping rescue the native red grape from near extinction and establishing it as one of Friuli's most distinctive, ageworthy varieties. Today Pierpaolo and Ivan Rapuzzi continue to farm a biodiverse landscape and work with Schioppettino, Ribolla Gialla, Picolit, Verduzzo, Refosco and Pignolo. The wines are classical rather than fashionable, combining freshness, savory detail and remarkable longevity while preserving the agricultural identity of their valley.
