Ronchi di Cialla
Price:$420.00

Grape: Schioppettino
Vintage: 1990
Type: Red

Presented in a magnum format for slow development, this mature red wine is a pure varietal bottling of schioppettino from Friuli. The Rapuzzi family saved this native variety from extinction, cultivating it inside the single-vineyard Cru-Monopole schioppettino di Cialla. The hand-picked fruit undergoes a traditional native fermentation with wild vineyard yeasts in neutral wooden tuns, avoiding modern extraction styling. It undergoes an extensive maturation process, aging in neutral oak casks followed by decades of bottle resting.

It pours a translucent ruby color with brick edges, releasing complex aromatics of crushed white pepper, cherries, and wild red berries. On the palate, the medium-bodied frame is silky and resolved, pairing mature fruit flavors with smooth, integrated tannins. The large format preserves a racy wave of natural acidity that runs through the center, keeping the mouthfeel thoroughly refreshed. Notes of wild herbs add depth across the fluid core.

Ronchi di Cialla is the Rapuzzi family's estate in the secluded Cialla Valley of Friuli's Colli Orientali. Founded in the 1970s, the family became crucial to the survival of Schioppettino, helping rescue the native red grape from near extinction and establishing it as one of Friuli's most distinctive, ageworthy varieties. Today Pierpaolo and Ivan Rapuzzi continue to farm a biodiverse landscape and work with Schioppettino, Ribolla Gialla, Picolit, Verduzzo, Refosco and Pignolo. The wines are classical rather than fashionable, combining freshness, savory detail and remarkable longevity while preserving the agricultural identity of their valley.
