Radikon Ribolla Gialla 2012 1L
RadikonGrape: Ribolla Gialla
Vintage: 2012
Type: White
This white wine is Radikon's ribolla gialla, made in Oslavia on the Collio border with the extended-maceration approach Stanko Radikon pioneered and his son Saša has carried on: roughly 4 months of skin contact followed by about 40 months in large oak barrels before release. That timeline is what turns a normally pale, neutral grape into the deep amber, tannic wine in this bottle. The 1L format is Radikon's own choice of bottle size, distinct from both a standard 750 and a half-bottle.
It displays a deep amber-orange color, opening with dried apricot, orange peel, and a resinous, tea-like note that comes with extended oxidative handling. On the palate, the medium-bodied frame carries real grip, with skin-derived tannin giving the wine a structure closer to a light red than a typical white. Acidity runs underneath and keeps the wine from feeling flat despite years in barrel. Savory, nutty notes layer in through the middle. It finishes long and dry, tannic and resinous rather than fruity.
Radikon is one of the foundational names of the modern skin-contact and natural-wine movement. Based in Oslavia, in Friuli near the Slovenian border, the Radikon family built its identity around long macerations for white grapes, minimal sulfur and a deeply traditional approach that had become radical by modern standards. Stanko Radikon helped bring these methods to international attention, and the estate continues under his family with Ribolla Gialla, Jakot, Pinot Grigio and other varieties. The wines are amber, structured and savory, less about novelty than about reviving a borderland culture of patience, texture and uncompromising farming.
