Pierre Gonon Saint-Joseph Rouge 2024
Pierre GononGrape: Syrah
Vintage: 2024
Type: Red
Sourced from steep, granite-rich slopes in Mauves, Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, and Tournon, this benchmark northern Rhône red comes from organically farmed old syrah vines. Brothers Jean and Pierre Gonon harvest entirely by hand, fermenting whole clusters naturally with native yeasts in traditional open-top oak vats. Gentle punch-downs and pump-overs extract fine structure before the wine ages for 12 to 14 months in large, neutral oak demi-muids and foudres. Bottled unfiltered without heavy intervention, this is a classic, pure expression of granite-grown syrah that exemplifies non-industrial, site-driven winemaking.
A deep ruby color with violet reflections introduces lifted aromas of crushed blackberry, smoked meat, cracked black pepper, and fresh violet petals. On the palate, focused flavors of dark plum, tart black cherry, olive tapenade, and granite dust unfold over a medium-to-full-bodied frame. Firm, fine-grained tannins and a bright beam of natural acidity give the mid-palate incredible structural focus and drive without feeling heavy. It closes on a long, savory finish marked by lingering notes of dark cocoa, cured game, and crushed stone.
