Price:$25.00

Grape: Xarel·lo, Macabeu, Parellada
Vintage: 2024
Type: Sparkling

This sparkling wine is a vintage Cava from Oriol Rossell's Cal Cassanyes estate at Sant Marçal in the Penedès, built from 50% xarel·lo, 30% macabeu, and 20% parellada. The fruit comes from estate plots planted between 1985 and 1995, including the 8-hectare Plana Gran. It rests on its lees until disgorgement in January 2026 and receives no dosage. It is the classic Penedès trio, shown dry and young.

It pours a pale lemon with a lively bead, opening with green apple, lemon, and fennel. On the palate, the light-bodied frame balances crisp citrus with a fine, creamy mousse. A saline, almond note from the xarel·lo sits underneath. With no dosage, the acidity runs clean and direct. It finishes dry, crisp, and refreshing.

Winery

The Rossell family's papers name a winemaker heir in the Penedès as early as 1497, and the family still lives at Cal Cassanyes, the house built near Sant Marçal in 1638. The modernist cellar where the cavas are made today went up in 1908, after the vineyards recovered from phylloxera. Oriol Rossell i Almirall bottled the first sparkling wines under his initials in 1979, and the estate's vines, all certified organic and farmed with biodynamic methods, grow on chalky, sandy soils around the house. Xarel·lo, grown here from vines more than 50 years old, is the estate's signature grape.
