O Estranxeiro Ribeira Sacra Branco 2023
Quinta do ExtranxeiroGrape: Godello, Treixadura, Albariño
Vintage: 2023
Type: White
This crisp white wine is an artisanal blend of godello, treixadura, and albariño from the steep terraces of the Ribeira Sacra D.O. Crafted by Eulogio Pomares and Marco Tapia, the project focuses on capturing a look at extreme Atlantic viticulture. The hand-picked grapes are pressed and undergo a spontaneous native yeast fermentation inside temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. It matures on its fine fermentation lees for several months to encourage structural harmony and texture without wood manipulation.
It pours a bright straw-yellow color, releasing a delightful bouquet of lemon, grapefruit, green apple, and white blossoms. A sleek, medium-bodied frame balances ripe stone fruit flavors with a chiseled mineral core. A lively wave of natural acidity cuts right through the slightly waxy texture, providing structural tension. Subtle touches of honey and marine salinity add deep balance across mid-palate volume. It concludes with a long, dry finish that leaves a refreshing, salty impression.
Quinta do Estranxeiro is Eulogio Pomares and Rebeca Montero's Ribeira Sacra project, launched after Pomares had already become a key figure at his family's Rias Baixas estate, Zarate. In the steep Galician canyons of the Mino and Sil rivers, they work old, bush-trained Mencia and white varieties such as Godello, farming organically despite the region's humid Atlantic pressure. The wines are fermented with native yeasts and aged in concrete, chestnut or large Italian botti, depending on the cuvee. The project captures Ribeira Sacra's drama without exaggeration: granite, slate, herbs, red fruit and a clear mountain-river freshness.
