This low-intervention red wine is crafted from ancient Blaufränkisch bush vines, some over a century old, in Lutzmannsburg. Roland Velich manages these heritage plots on complex loam and limestone terraces to capture old-vine concentration and depth. The hand-picked grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation with native wild yeasts in traditional open-top wooden fermenters, skipping modern additions. The wine completes its natural maturation over several months inside seasoned large oak casks before an unfiltered bottling.

It displays a deep ruby hue, releasing a complex nose of dark plums, wild blackberries, black tea, and crushed stones. On the palate, the medium-bodied framework balances a concentrated fruit core with a firm line of fine-grained tannins. Savory underscores of forest floor, warm spices, and a light earthiness add depth across the fluid mouthfeel. A clean wave of natural acidity runs through the center, keeping the profile beautifully fresh. It concludes with an bone-dry finish.

Moric is Roland Velich's project in Burgenland, and one of the estates most responsible for restoring Blaufrankisch to serious conversation. Instead of treating the grape as a simple, fruit-driven red, Velich approached it with the sensitivity usually reserved for Burgundy: old vines, specific villages, restrained extraction and aging that emphasizes structure over gloss. The wines come from places such as Lutzmannsburg and Neckenmarkt, where limestone, schist and old vine material give Blaufrankisch depth, spice and nerve. Moric's best bottles are savory and transparent, proving that Austria's great red grape can be both intellectual and deeply pleasurable.
