Montevertine Le Pergole Torte 2022
MontevertineGrape: Sangiovese
Vintage: 2022
Type: Red
Sourced from the estate's oldest north-northeast-facing plots in Radda in Chianti, this iconic bottling is a celebration of high-altitude Sangiovese grown on rocky galestro and limestone soils. The 2022 growing season brought a warm, generous summer, but the cool nights of these elevated hills preserved crucial tension. Fermented in traditional concrete vats, the juice undergoes an intentional two-year élevage, moving from a mix of French oak barriques to larger Slavonian casks to let the raw character of the fruit breathe without masking it under oak flavors. It stands as a defiant, pure expression of what Sangiovese can achieve when left to its own devices.
In the glass, it shows a luminous, deep garnet hue with brilliant ruby edges. The nose immediately pulls you in with layered aromas of sour cherry, dried rose petals, bergamot, and a faint whisper of tobacco leaf. On the palate, the warmth of the vintage shows through a slightly richer, more generous core of dark plum and licorice, wrapped in firm, chalky tannins. There is a distinct "vertical" lift of mineral-driven acidity that slices through the fruit weight, keeping the entire structure vibrant. The finish is remarkably long and savory, leaving a lingering trail of black pepper, cedar, and crushed earth.
