This red wine is a blend, 90% sangiovese with 5% each of canaiolo and colorino, grown in Radda in Chianti and vinified by Martino Manetti with the estate's own cellar team and enologist Paolo Salvi, following the teaching of Giulio Gambelli and Bruno Bini. The wine is labeled simply Toscana IGT rather than Chianti Classico, the mark of the estate's 1980s exit from the DOCG in protest of rules requiring white grapes in the blend. At 13% alcohol, it is built on restraint rather than concentration.

It displays a translucent ruby color, opening with red cherry, violet, and a faint tobacco note. On the palate, the medium-bodied frame is elegant and structured, balancing bright red fruit against fine, sandy tannin. Acidity runs high, a sangiovese hallmark that keeps the wine lifted. Savory, herbal notes deepen the fruit through the middle. It finishes long and precise, built for the cellar as much as the table.

Montevertine is one of Tuscany’s most revered historic wine estates, located 425 meters above sea level in the high-elevation hills of Radda in Chianti, Italy. Founded in 1967 by Sergio Manetti and run today by his son Martino, the estate spans 18 hectares of rocky, calcareous soils planted almost exclusively to native varieties: 90% Sangiovese alongside traditional blending grapes Canaiolo and Colorino. Montevertine occupies a legendary, rebellious place in Italian wine history; in 1981, Manetti chose to leave the Chianti Classico consortium entirely rather than comply with a mandate to blend white grapes into his reds. Because of this defiance, the estate voluntarily relegated its production to the broader Toscana IGT classification, yet wine purists worldwide still consider it the absolute purest blueprint of traditional Chianti terroir.

The estate's minimalist, organic winemaking relies entirely on concrete vats, gravity-fed movement, and traditional Slavonian oak aging to craft three highly allocated, unfiltered red wines. Pian del Ciampolo serves as the estate's fresh, approachable entry-level bottling, while the namesake Montevertine offers a deeply structured, savory blend built for aging. The crown jewel of the portfolio is Le Pergole Torte, a legendary 100% Sangiovese cult wine sourced strictly from the estate's oldest 1968 vines. Renowned for its multi-decade aging potential and its striking, collectible labels featuring women's faces painted by artist Alberto Manfredi, it stands as one of Italy's greatest vinous masterpieces.
