Matthiasson Village Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
MatthiassonGrape: Cabernet Sauvignon
Vintage: 2022
Type: Red
This organic cabernet sauvignon is a village cuvée blended from multiple small vineyards situated throughout the Napa Valley region. The fruit is selected from parcels stretching from Calistoga down to Carneros, all farmed under strict sustainable viticulture guidelines. Winemaker Steve Matthiasson utilizes spontaneous native fermentation with wild vineyard yeasts in neutral tanks, skipping modern high-oak extraction styling. The wine matures in a mix of used French barrels to allow the structural elements to integrate naturally.
It pours a dark ruby color, releasing abundant aromatics of bright cherry, blackberry, cranberry, and fresh mountain herbs. On the palate, a sleek, medium-bodied frame pairs geometry-driven red fruit flavors with a chiseled, graphite mineral line. A lively wave of natural acidity cuts through the center, keeping the fluid mouthfeel thoroughly refreshed. Medium, fine-grained tannins provide a supple structural frame that coordinates nicely with the fruit. It finishes dry, leaving a trail of cedar.
Matthiasson is one of the quiet intellectual centers of contemporary Napa Valley. Steve and Jill Klein Matthiasson built their estate around organic farming, restrained winemaking and a belief that California wine can be ripe, fresh and table-ready at the same time. Steve's background as a viticultural consultant gives the wines an unusually agricultural foundation, while the cellar work avoids excess oak, alcohol and manipulation. Their range includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Ribolla Gialla, Refosco and inventive white blends, all marked by energy, savory detail and a Mediterranean sense of balance that feels refreshingly human for Napa.
