Maison en Belles Lies L'Etrange 2020
Maison en Belles LiesGrape: Gamay, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay
Vintage: 2020
Type: Red
This natural red wine is a non-traditional blend of sixty percent gamay, twenty-five percent pinot noir, and fifteen percent chardonnay. Sourced from various organic parcels in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, the vines are managed by Pierre Fenals under biodynamic practices. The winemaking involves a spontaneous co-fermentation of whole bunches utilizing a traditional carbonic maceration inside neutral tanks. It matures on its fine lees in old barrels and is bottled completely unfined, unfiltered, and without any added sulfur.
It displays a bright garnet hue, releasing unique aromatics of liquor-infused Morello cherries, marzipan, black pepper, and tamarind. On the palate, a light-to-medium-bodied frame balances red fruit flavors with a rustic elegance and texturally detailed mouthfeel. A zesty, electric acidity cuts through the core concentration, keeping the wine lively. Subtle notes of allspice integrate smoothly with soft, fine-grained tannins. It finishes completely bone-dry, leaving a long, clean, and savory trail.
Maison en Belles Lies is Pierre Fenals' small Burgundy domaine based in Saint-Aubin, created after a first career far from wine and shaped by a strong commitment to biodynamics. Fenals works tiny parcels across the Cote de Beaune, including Maranges, Santenay, Saint-Aubin and Corton, farming with plant preparations, plowing and close attention to soil life. In the cellar he prefers native yeasts, long elevage, little sulfur and a patient, tactile style. The wines are earthy, expressive and sometimes rustic in the best sense, showing Burgundy as a living farm system rather than a polished luxury object.
