Magoutes Vineyard Xinomavro 2022

Magoutes Vineyard
Price:$35.00

Grape: Xinomavro
Vintage: 2022
Type: Red

This red wine is the estate xinomavro from the Magoutes vineyard, planted at 745 to 890 meters on limestone and clay in Siatista. Yields of 0.5 to 1.5 kg per vine give concentration to a grape that can be thin when pushed. It is the house's core red, made to show the vineyard without the extra selection and aging of the Parcel Selection. Mountain altitude gives it a cooler, more Burgundian profile than the xinomavro of Naoussa.

It pours a translucent ruby, opening with sour cherry, raspberry, and dried rose. On the palate, the medium-bodied frame balances tart red fruit with firm, grippy tannins. Tomato leaf, dried herbs, and an earthy note sit underneath. A bright line of acidity cuts through the center. It finishes dry, savory, and long.

Magoutes Vineyard sits at 750 to 890 meters outside Siatista, in the mountains of western Macedonia, far enough inland that neither the Aegean nor the Ionian softens its climate. Early in the 20th century Dimitrios Diamantis' grandfather, one of Siatista's leading growers, hand-grafted the family land with xinomavro and the rare local grapes moschomavro and nigrikiotiko. As the region's vineyards faded, Diamantis and his partner George Papageorgiou, whose family is also from Siatista, saved enough old vine material in the early 1990s to replant 18 hectares on limestone and clay. The first bottling came in 2002, and the vineyard is farmed organically.
