Magoutes Vineyard Vieilles Vignes Blanc 2024

Grape: Xinomavro
Vintage: 2024
Type: White

This white wine is a blanc de noirs, made from the red grape xinomavro by pressing whole clusters straight away so the skins give no color. The fruit comes from 80- to 90-year-old vines in the south-facing Magoutes vineyard at 745 to 890 meters, on limestone and clay. It ferments in concrete, then rests for a month in large Austrian oak vats. It is a rare white expression of a grape almost always made as a firm red.

It pours a pale straw with a faint copper glint, opening with lemon, white cherry, and wild herbs. On the palate, the medium-bodied frame balances crisp citrus with a subtle, textured grip from the red grape. A stony, chalky note sits underneath. High-altitude acidity runs through the center and keeps it fresh. It finishes dry, saline, and clean.

Magoutes Vineyard sits at 750 to 890 meters outside Siatista, in the mountains of western Macedonia, far enough inland that neither the Aegean nor the Ionian softens its climate. Early in the 20th century Dimitrios Diamantis' grandfather, one of Siatista's leading growers, hand-grafted the family land with xinomavro and the rare local grapes moschomavro and nigrikiotiko. As the region's vineyards faded, Diamantis and his partner George Papageorgiou, whose family is also from Siatista, saved enough old vine material in the early 1990s to replant 18 hectares on limestone and clay. The first bottling came in 2002, and the vineyard is farmed organically.
