Magoutes Vineyard Parcel Selection Xinomavro 2018

Magoutes Vineyard
Price:$90.00

Grape: Xinomavro
Vintage: 2018
Type: Red

This red wine is the top bottling of the Magoutes vineyard, xinomavro from old-vine parcels selected within the site at 745 to 890 meters in Siatista. The vines grow on limestone and clay and give only 0.5 to 1.5 kg of fruit each. Siatista is the least known of Greece's xinomavro regions and the highest, which keeps the grape's acidity and perfume sharp.

It pours a medium ruby with a garnet rim, opening with red and black cherry, plum, and violet. On the palate, the medium-bodied frame balances concentrated fruit with firm, fine-grained tannins. Green and black olive, garrigue, and a hint of tomato leaf sit underneath. A vibrant line of acidity keeps the structure taut. It finishes long, dry, and savory.

Winery

Magoutes Vineyard sits at 750 to 890 meters outside Siatista, in the mountains of western Macedonia, far enough inland that neither the Aegean nor the Ionian softens its climate. Early in the 20th century Dimitrios Diamantis' grandfather, one of Siatista's leading growers, hand-grafted the family land with xinomavro and the rare local grapes moschomavro and nigrikiotiko. As the region's vineyards faded, Diamantis and his partner George Papageorgiou, whose family is also from Siatista, saved enough old vine material in the early 1990s to replant 18 hectares on limestone and clay. The first bottling came in 2002, and the vineyard is farmed organically.
