Grape: Moschomavro
Vintage: 2022
Type: Red

This red wine is moschomavro, a rare grape native to Siatista in western Macedonia, from the Magoutes vineyard at 745 to 890 meters on limestone and clay. Yields are kept to 0.5 to 1.5 kg per vine, very low for a red that is usually overcropped when it is grown at all. It is made by the Diamantis-Papageorgiou family, who have spent years rescuing abandoned old vineyards around Siatista. It is a lighter, more aromatic counterpart to the estate's xinomavro.

It pours a translucent ruby, opening with red cherry, rose petal, and white pepper. On the palate, the light-to-medium-bodied frame balances bright red fruit with fine, gentle tannins. Dried herbs and a stony, mountain note sit underneath. Fresh acidity from the high altitude keeps it lifted. It finishes dry, crunchy, and clean.

Magoutes Vineyard sits at 750 to 890 meters outside Siatista, in the mountains of western Macedonia, far enough inland that neither the Aegean nor the Ionian softens its climate. Early in the 20th century Dimitrios Diamantis' grandfather, one of Siatista's leading growers, hand-grafted the family land with xinomavro and the rare local grapes moschomavro and nigrikiotiko. As the region's vineyards faded, Diamantis and his partner George Papageorgiou, whose family is also from Siatista, saved enough old vine material in the early 1990s to replant 18 hectares on limestone and clay. The first bottling came in 2002, and the vineyard is farmed organically.
