Peter Lauer Barrel X Saar 2022
Peter lauerGrape: Riesling
Vintage: 2022
Type: White
This off-dry white wine is an entry-level regional bottling produced by Florian Lauer from family parcels across the cool Saar valley. The estate manages the steep terraces sustainably, cultivating old riesling vines rooted in weathered slate soils that lock in high minerality. Spontaneous fermentation relies on native vineyard wild yeasts inside neutral oak barrels and stainless steel vats, utilizing temperature controls. This low-intervention process focuses on capturing natural structural harmony and a classic feinherb balance between sugar and acidity.
It pours a pale straw-yellow color, releasing sharp aromatics of tart green apple, citrus rind, wet minerals, and a hint of petrol. A light-bodied, lively frame pairs crisp fruit flavors with a bracing line of mountain acidity. The residual sweetness coordinates with the racy entry, preventing the texture from feeling overly sharp or austere. A strong vein of slate salinity runs through the center, adding complex architectural tension.
Peter Lauer is one of the great names of the Saar, a Mosel subregion defined by cool temperatures, slate soils and piercing Riesling. Based in Ayl, the Lauer family has farmed the Ayler Kupp and neighboring sites for generations, with Florian Lauer now guiding the domaine. The estate is known for bottlings identified by old cask numbers, each tied to particular parcels and styles, and for wines that prize clarity over sweetness. Whether dry, off-dry or nobly sweet, Lauer Rieslings are electric, herbal and slate-driven, showing the Saar's ability to make wines of delicacy that still feel intensely alive.
