Lalù Barolo del Comune di Monforte d'Alba 2022

Azienda Agricola Lalu
Price:$128.00

Grape: Nebbiolo
Vintage: 2022
Type: Red

This red wine is Barolo from Monforte d'Alba, made by Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala, who trained at Burgundy estates before founding Lalù. They farm about 5 hectares of nebbiolo and barbera organically across Monforte and La Morra. The wine is fermented and aged in large conical oak casks of at least 15 hectoliters. It is built for long aging, with a Burgundian lightness of touch.

It pours a translucent garnet, opening with sour cherry, rose petal, and baking spice. On the palate, the medium-to-full-bodied frame balances bright red fruit with firm, fine-grained tannins. Tar, dried herbs, and a mineral note sit underneath. Vibrant acidity keeps the structure lifted. It finishes long, dry, and perfumed.

Azienda Agricola Lalú is the collaborative vision of Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala, who met at the University of Pollenzo before gaining extensive experience at elite estates like Trediberri, Conterno-Fantino, and Burgundy’s Domaine Lafon. Their project, which began with a 2015 vineyard purchase in the Roncaglie cru, is centered on organic viticulture and a commitment to carbon-neutral principles. Based in a rental cellar in Serralunga d’Alba, they produce Barolo from high-elevation vines in the Le Coste cru of Monforte d’Alba, along with Barbera and Langhe Nebbiolo from Bussia and Roncaglie. Their winemaking is highly adaptive, utilizing native yeasts, spontaneous fermentations started with a pied de cuvée, and selective whole-cluster inclusion that sometimes involves meticulous hand-destemming. By aging their wines in a combination of concrete and large Austrian oak, they aim to preserve the purity of the fruit and the specific character of each vintage while reflecting the technical wisdom they inherited from their mentors in both Italy and France.
