Domaine de la Cadette Champs Cadet Bourgogne 2023
Domaine de la CadetteGrape: Pinot Noir
Vintage: 2023
Type: Red
Produced from organically farmed vineyards in Vezelay, this northern Burgundy red wine represents a low-intervention look at the pinot noir grape. The estate manages the old vines on calcareous clay soils, utilizing hand-harvesting and spontaneous native yeast fermentation in neutral vats. The winemaking avoids modern extraction corrections or additions, letting the fruit express the cool microclimate naturally. The wine matures in neutral vessels to ensure structural balance without wood flavor intervention.
It shows a clear ruby color, releasing an inviting bouquet of red cherries, raspberries, and a subtle smoky complexity. On the palate, a smooth, well-structured frame showcases a harmonious balance of fruit and fine-grained, supple tannins. Savory notes of damp earth and dark mineral spice develop nicely as the fluid mouthfeel expands. An energetic thread of natural acidity runs through the center, keeping the texture fresh. It finishes long and dry, leaving a charming trail of berries.
Winery
Domaine de la Cadette began with vines planted by Jean Montanet in 1987 near Vézelay, in northern Burgundy. The domaine moved to organic farming in 1999 and has been certified since the 2002 vintage. Its vineyards are planted mainly to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with small amounts of Melon de Bourgogne and the old regional red variety César. These holdings link the family’s work to a part of Burgundy whose vineyard traditions extend beyond the better-known villages of the Côte d’Or.
Today the harvest is sold to and vinified by La Sœur Cadette, managed by Jean’s son Valentin. His aim is to make the relationship between Vézelay’s different soils and the resulting wines easy to recognize. The family also works with Domaine Montanet-Thoden, while La Sœur Cadette includes a separate négociant activity. Those related names reflect different vineyards and fruit sources rather than interchangeable labels. Cadette’s place within that family is grounded in its own organically farmed parcels and the clear expression of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Vézelay.
