Grape: Marsanne
Vintage: 2022
Type: Orange

This skin-contact orange wine is a pure varietal bottling of marsanne produced by low-intervention winemaker Justine Vigne in the Rhône Valley. The fruit is hand-harvested from organically managed plots rooted in complex calcareous soils that protect natural structural acidity. The winemaking features an extended skin maceration inside neutral tanks, relying entirely on native wild yeasts for a completely spontaneous fermentation. It matures on its fine fermentation lees to encourage natural structural harmony and texture without wood manipulation.

It pours a clear straw-yellow color, releasing clean aromatics of ripe apricot, white peach, and acacia blossom over a subtle mineral baseline. On the palate, the dry, medium-bodied frame balances stone fruit flavors with a fresh, clean acidity. The traditional skin contact provides a waxy texture that rounds out mid-palate cleanly. Subtle notes of raw almond and wild herbs add a nutty complexity across the tongue. It concludes with a long, persistent finish.

Justine Vigne works in Richerenches, in the Enclave des Papes of northern Provence, on family land with a long agricultural history. Her early interests in art, music and ceramics were followed by wine studies in Burgundy and experience in Australia with biodynamic grower John Nagorcka. Returning home, she took on a small portion of the family vineyards to develop her own approach. Limestone soils, Mediterranean sun and cool air arriving from the Alps create the setting for Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault and white varieties.

Biodynamic farming and work with horses reflect her interest in an agriculture attentive to the rhythms of the land. In the cellar, amphorae and Georgian qvevri are important tools, influenced in part by her neighbor Philippe Viret. The cuvées carry personal references: Sensation takes its name from Rimbaud’s poem, while Anitcha refers to impermanence. Those influences give the project a distinct voice, but its substance comes from the practical work of farming, fermenting and raising grapes grown in this particular corner of Provence.
