Grape: Syrah
Vintage: 2018
Type: Red

This low-intervention red wine is crafted by the collaborative project of winemakers Gagnepain and Risoul in southern France. Sourced from small, sustainably worked parcels, the fruit grows on stony terraces that naturally restrict vine yields. The winemaking utilizes spontaneous native yeast fermentation inside neutral vessels to capture raw varietal freshness without chemical corrections. The wine undergoes a natural aging process on its fine lees before being bottled completely unfiltered and unfined.

It pours a translucent ruby-purple color, opening with expressive aromatics of wild blackberry, fresh plum, and cracked black pepper. On the palate, the light-to-medium body is juicy and direct, balancing crunchy dark fruit with a fine-grained tannin structure. Savory nuances of wild thyme, black olive, and smoked meat develop across the fluid mouthfeel. A clean wave of natural acidity runs through the center, keeping the texture refreshed. It finishes bone-dry, leaving a lingering trace of graphite.

Gagnepain et Risoul Vins, also known as GR Vins, is a négociant project founded by Rhône Valley consulting enologists Emmanuel "Manu" Gagnepain and David Risoul in 2014. The duo is known for crafting elegant, terroir-driven wines with a focus on freshness and minerality, sourcing organically farmed grapes from top producers across the southern Mediterranean. Gagnepain and Risoul collaborate closely with their partner growers, purchasing organically farmed fruit from select parcels. The grapes are then vinified with minimal intervention to allow the unique character of the Mediterranean terroirs to express themselves. Both founders are highly respected consultants in the French wine industry. Emmanuel Gagnepain, in particular, is a well-known enologist in the Rhône Valley and Corsica, consulting for over 70 domaines.
