Grape: Tempranillo
Vintage: 2019
Type: Red

This cuvée is 100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo).  It comes from a very old vineyard where clay predominates, at an elevation of 800 meters. Produced with a similar vinification and elevage as his other Ribera del Duero parcel red wines, Arcilla is the fullest and most lush of his wines.

Goyo Garcia Viadero comes from one of Ribera del Duero's long-established wine families, but his own project moves deliberately away from the region's modern reputation for heavy extraction, new oak and highly polished cellar work. The son of the founder of Bodegas Valduero, Goyo began his independent estate in 2003 with old family parcels around Gumiel del Mercado, working with Tinto Fino, Albillo and other local varieties in some of the highest, coolest sites of Ribera del Duero. His focus is on recovering the older voice of the region: centenarian vines, organic farming, native yeasts and patient work in a cold underground cellar. In the vineyard he avoids chemical inputs and pushes for freshness rather than overripeness; in the cellar he uses gentle handling, long fermentations, old barrels, no fining or filtering, and little to no sulfur. The wines are direct, savory and quietly radical for Ribera del Duero, shaped less by power than by altitude, limestone, clay and the memory of how the area tasted before modern fashion took over.
