Goyo Garcia Viadero Ribera del Duero Finca El Peruco 2019
Goyo GarciaGrape: Tempranillo & Albillo
Vintage: 2019
Type: Red
Comprised of 85% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 15% Albillo, this single-vineyard sits at 1,000 meters of elevation, one of the highest points in the Ribera del Duero, on profoundly chalky, clay-calcareous soils. The wine is fermented in a small foudre and then raised in 14-year-old barrels for 2-3 years and then another year or two in bottle before release. No sulfur or any other winemaking products are used in the making of this wine.
Goyo Garcia Viadero comes from one of Ribera del Duero's long-established wine families, but his own project moves deliberately away from the region's modern reputation for heavy extraction, new oak and highly polished cellar work. The son of the founder of Bodegas Valduero, Goyo began his independent estate in 2003 with old family parcels around Gumiel del Mercado, working with Tinto Fino, Albillo and other local varieties in some of the highest, coolest sites of Ribera del Duero. His focus is on recovering the older voice of the region: centenarian vines, organic farming, native yeasts and patient work in a cold underground cellar. In the vineyard he avoids chemical inputs and pushes for freshness rather than overripeness; in the cellar he uses gentle handling, long fermentations, old barrels, no fining or filtering, and little to no sulfur. The wines are direct, savory and quietly radical for Ribera del Duero, shaped less by power than by altitude, limestone, clay and the memory of how the area tasted before modern fashion took over.
