Fabio Gea Notu Seguiva le Gocce Acqua Barbaresco 2018
Fabio GeaGrape: Nebbiolo
Vintage: 2018
Type: Red
This true Barbaresco cuvee represents an old-school approach to the Nebbiolo grape from small village parcels near Neive. Former geologist turned natural winemaker Fabio Gea works his tiny plots organically to protect delicate soil life. The hand-harvested fruit is destemmed and ferments spontaneously with native wild yeasts in neutral concrete containers. It matures for over three years in old untoasted barrels and custom porcelain jars without synthetic corrections.
It pours a translucent ruby color with light garnet edges, releasing aromatics of red cherry, licorice, woodsmoke, and tar. On the palate, a medium-bodied frame balances focused fruit flavors with a firm, chalky tannin backbone. Savory notes of dried herbs and tobacco leaf add depth across the fluid mouthfeel. A clean vein of mountain acidity cuts through the texture, keeping the wine lively. It finishes long, dry, and persistent, leaving a stony trace.
Fabio Gea:
Fabio is a young winemaker making delicious, distinctive wines from tiny parcels around the Bricco in Barbaresco. He makes 18 different wines with a total production of around 5,000 bottles.
He has a few rows of vines from his grandfather’s property and rents a few more. Within the family’s property, there is Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera, and Grignolino, which amount to less than one hectare.
A geologist turned winemaker, the handmade labels, bottles, and aging are uniquely Fabio Gea. We find these wines fascinating, one of our great joys is having such distinctive wines. Organic (not certified)
