Grape: Gamay
Vintage: 2021
Type: Red

This red wine is crafted by natural wine pioneer Jean Foillard from old gamay vines on the famed Côte du Py slope in Morgon. The vineyard is characterized by decomposed schist and manganese soils that restrict yields and build structural complexity. The winemaking utilizes a low-intervention, whole-cluster semi-carbonic maceration with native wild yeasts at cool temperatures in neutral concrete tanks. It matures for several months in seasoned Burgundy barrels and is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

It pours a vibrant ruby color, opening with aromas of crushed raspberries, wild cherries, and violet petals over a background of stone. On the palate, the medium-bodied frame is pure and pairing crunchy red fruit flavors with a chiseled mineral baseline. Silky, fine-grained tannins integrate with a lively thread of natural acidity. Notes of damp earth and wild spice develop nicely as the fluid mouthfeel expands.

A pioneer of the region's natural wine movement, Jean Foillard is famous for producing deep, structured, and age-worthy Gamay wines with a distinctive purity of fruit and minerality. Foillard's low-intervention philosophy involves using organic viticulture, harvesting ripe grapes by hand, and fermenting with native yeasts and whole clusters. The wines are then aged in neutral oak barrels and bottled with little to no filtration or added sulfur, allowing the terroir to shine through. The wines produced by Domaine Jean Foillard are celebrated for their complexity, intense fruit, and velvety texture.
