Fioritura Vermentino 2024
FiorituraGrape: Vermentino
Vintage: 2024
Type: White
Sourced from Margett Vineyard in northern Paso Robles, this white wine showcases vermentino crafted with a minimal intervention approach. The grapes grow on sandy loam soils farmed with manual viticulture techniques to protect natural varietal balance. Winemaking involves foot-treading and a brief one-hour skin maceration before pressing, followed by native yeast fermentation in neutral oak barrels. Matured for eight months on its lees without filtering, this cuvée establishes a fresh coastal identity.
It pours a pale straw color with green highlights, opening with fresh aromatics of lemon zest, honeysuckle, and sea spray. A sleek, light-to-medium-bodied frame balances crisp orchard fruit flavors with an underlying stony mineral core. A lively wave of natural acidity runs through the center, keeping the fluid mouthfeel thoroughly refreshed. The extended lees contact coordinates smoothly with a distinct vein of marine salinity across the mid-palate. It concludes with a bone-dry finish, leaving a lingering mineral trace.
Winery
Fioritura is a small California Central Coast project inspired by Italian grape varieties and a formative harvest in Umbria in 2019. That experience, followed by work in Chile, Oregon, New Zealand, Italy and California, shaped a preference for gentle, attentive winemaking. The project works with organic and biodynamic vineyards, bringing grapes such as Vermentino and Sangiovese into a distinctly Californian setting. Its name means “bloom” in Italian, referring to a brief stage in nature and the constant change that comes with farming.
The 2024 Vermentino offers a specific example of the approach. Fruit from Margett Vineyard in northern Paso Robles grows on sandy loam soils, then receives a short period of skin contact after foot treading. Fermentation begins with native yeasts in neutral oak, followed by eight months on the lees. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfur. That combination of Italian inspiration, local vineyard sources and restrained handling gives Fioritura a clear identity grounded in the practical details of how each wine is made.
