Fabio Gea Onde Gravitazionali Rosso 2022
Fabio GeaGrape: Nebbiolo, Barbera, Native Grapes
Vintage: 2022
Type: Red
Translating to "Gravitational Waves," this vintage-led cuvée is described by radical winemaker Fabio Gea as a "surfer wine"—an exercise in riding the wave of the specific growing season and relying entirely on gut instinct. The 2022 edition utilizes an unconventional field blend of 67% Nebbiolo, 30% Barbera, and 3% unspecified native wild grapes, all harvested from tiny, hand-tended plots inherited from his grandfather near Bricco di Neive. The fruit is destemmed and macerated for two weeks before undergoing a spontaneous wild fermentation. True to Gea's avant-garde philosophy, the wine is raised entirely in his signature homemade porcelain and stoneware vessels, skipping wood aging completely to ensure an unfiltered, zero-sulfur snapshot of Piedmontese terroir in its rawest form.
In the glass, it pours a luminous, translucent ruby color with bright garnet highlights. The aromatics are highly detailed and expressive, bursting with high-toned red cherries, pomegranate, dried rose petals, and a complex, savory undercurrent of dry clay, white pepper, and wild brush. On the palate, a "crystalline" core of electric, limestone-driven acidity slices through the fleshy concentration of the 2022 fruit, providing immediate athletic energy. The variety's natural, fine-grained tannins add a confident structural frame, while the porcelain aging keeps the mid-palate remarkably slick, supple, and weightless. It glides into a persistent, bone-dry finish that leaves a mouthwatering trail of wild cranberries, damp forest floor, and crushed stone.
Fabio Gea:
Fabio is a young winemaker making delicious, distinctive wines from tiny parcels around the Bricco in Barbaresco. He makes 18 different wines with a total production of around 5,000 bottles.
He has a few rows of vines from his grandfather’s property and rents a few more. Within the family’s property, there is Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera, and Grignolino, which amount to less than one hectare.
A geologist turned winemaker, the handmade labels, bottles, and aging are uniquely Fabio Gea. We find these wines fascinating, one of our great joys is having such distinctive wines. Organic (not certified)
