Envinate Taganan Tinto 2021
EnvinateGrape: Listán Negro, Negramoll, Mulata, Listán Cacho, Malvasía Rosada
Vintage: 2021
Type: Red
This low-intervention red wine co-ferments listán negro, negramoll, mulata, listán cacho, and malvasía rosada from old ungrafted vines on the volcanic cliffs of Taganana. The Envínate cooperative manages these human-scale plots organically where steep basalt rocks meet the Atlantic Ocean. Hand-picked grapes undergo spontaneous native yeast fermentation with a high proportion of whole clusters in neutral open vats. Aged in used French oak barrels, this bottling delivers a distinct oceanic volcanic identity.
It exhibits a clear ruby hue, releasing a complex nose of wild dark cherry, raspberry, cracked black pepper, and volcanic ash. A light-to-medium body feels energetic and fluid, balancing crunchy red berry fruit with a serious structural line. Savory notes of damp earth, black olive, and wild herbs blend smoothly into the core across the mid-palate. Taut, fine-grained tannins integrate smoothly with an underlying mineral salinity. It finishes bone-dry, leaving a long trail of crushed stone.
Envínate is a collective of four friends who create highly sought-after, terroir-driven wines from distinct, Atlantic-influenced regions across Spain. The name, which translates to "wine yourself," reflects their minimal intervention philosophy, using old-fashioned farming and winemaking methods to allow each parcel to express its character. Founded in 2005 by friends Roberto Santana, Alfonso Torrente, Laura Ramos, and José Martínez, the group initially started as a winemaking consultancy before evolving into its own label. Envínate's methods involve working with organic and biodynamic principles in the vineyard, followed by fermentation with native yeasts and aging in old oak or concrete. They avoid fining, filtering, and use minimal to no sulfur.
