Justin Dutraive Fleurie La Madone 2022
Justin DutraiveGrape: Gamay
Vintage: 2022
Type: Red
This red wine is a small-batch cru Beaujolais project crafted by Justin Dutraive from the historic La Madone parcel in Fleurie. The old Gamay bush vines are rooted in pink decomposed granite soils that restrict yields and lock in high minerality. The hand-harvested fruit undergoes a traditional whole-cluster carbonic maceration driven by native vineyard wild yeasts in neutral concrete vats. It matures naturally in seasoned French oak barrels to allow the structural components to settle without wood dominance.
It pours a translucent ruby color, opening with fragrant aromas of fresh raspberry, red currant, and dried purple flowers. On the palate, the light-to-medium body is fluid and precise, balancing crunchy red fruit with a chiseled mineral baseline. Taut, fine-grained tannins provide a subtle structural grip across mid-palate volume without feeling heavy. A clean wave of mountain acidity cuts through the texture, maintaining great freshness. It finishes bone-dry, leaving a light trail.
Justin Dutraive represents the next generation of the Dutraive family in Beaujolais, carrying forward the natural-wine instincts of Fleurie while building his own identity. The son of Jean-Louis Dutraive, Justin began making wines under his own label from organically farmed parcels and carefully selected fruit, working with the same respect for whole clusters, native yeasts and minimal sulfur that shaped his father's reputation. His wines are bright, energetic and immediate, but they are not casual. They show a young vigneron's desire to keep Beaujolais vivid and drinkable while still honoring the granitic soils and old-vine material that make the region matter.
