If each generation leaves its mark on a domaine, André Ostertag’s on Domaine Ostertag can’t be underestimated. In the 1980s, after training in Burgundy, he returned to the family domaine his father had built in the 1960s with renewed zeal: he lowered yields considerably, adopted biodynamic viticulture across his fourteen hectares of vineyards, and sought nuance in terroir rather than the typicity of a grape variety.

Andre's son, Arthur, returned to the domaine in 2016 and 2017, under the guidance of André, and learned to vinify the domaine’s classic cuvées. By 2018, he was fully calling the shots. Arthur continues to keep yields low, and in the cellar, pressing is slow and gentle to avoid tampering with the grapes' amers (subtle bitter notes), which preserve longevity and dimension in the finished wines. He favors long élevages, all with the goal of making wines that “create thirst,” not quench it; wines that are savory and complex. Arthur has also supplemented the domaine’s historical cuvées with original bottlings of his own, highlighting new lieux-dits and experimenting with techniques such as skin maceration, which showcase his individuality as a vigneron.

This playful blend of Gewurztraminer with a splash of Sylvaner is simultaneously fresh and deep, possessing otherworldly aromas and flavors of rose petal, apricot, and peach. Pair it with a creamy polenta, onion tart, or your favorite card game.
