Domaine Ostertag The New Chapter 2023 Vin Orange
Domaine OstertagGrape: Gewürztraminer, Sylvaner
Vintage: 2023
Type: Orange
This skin-contact orange wine is an artisanal blend of gewürztraminer and sylvaner crafted by Arthur Ostertag in Alsace. The estate manages its fourteen hectares under strict certified biodynamic viticulture, focusing on low yields and site specificity. The winemaking utilizes a slow, gentle press to preserve the grapes' natural bitter components, which build structural dimension and longevity. The fruit undergoes spontaneous native yeast fermentation and extended skin maceration in neutral vessels, avoiding modern additions or wood flavor dominance.
It pours a hazy amber-orange color, releasing complex aromatics of fresh rose petals, ripe apricot, and juicy peach. A medium-bodied frame is simultaneously fresh and deep, balancing succulent stone fruit flavors with a tea-like tannin structure. A subtle phenolic grip frames mid-palate cleanly, balanced by a sharp beam of mineral acidity. The natural amers provide an elegant, structured baseline that keeps the mouthfeel dry. It finishes clean and dry, leaving a savory trace.
Domaine Ostertag is an influential Alsace estate in Epfig, founded by the Ostertag family in 1966 and transformed by André Ostertag after he returned from winemaking studies in Burgundy. André brought low yields, biodynamic farming and a parcel-specific approach to the domaine, treating varieties and soils as distinct voices rather than forcing them into a single regional style. Since 2018 his son Arthur has led the estate, continuing work with Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and the Pinot family across sites including Muenchberg Grand Cru. The wines are dry, layered and precise, marrying Alsatian perfume with Burgundian ideas of texture and élevage.
