Chateau Le Puy
Price:$185.00

Grape: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon
Vintage: 2020
Type: Red

This red wine is Le Puy's top cuvée, drawn from a single parcel called Les Rocs on the same limestone plateau as Saint-Émilion, planted to about 85% merlot and 15% cabernet sauvignon. The Amoreau family has farmed the estate since 1610 and has never used synthetic treatments; it is now certified biodynamic. Fermentation uses only native yeasts, and the wine is raised for about 24 months in old barrels with racking timed to the lunar calendar. It is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no added sulfur.

It pours a deep garnet, opening with black cherry, plum, and violets. On the palate, the full-bodied frame balances concentrated dark fruit with fine, polished tannins. Graphite, tobacco, and a mineral note sit underneath. Fresh acidity keeps the richness lifted and precise. It finishes long, dry, and layered.

Winery

Château Le Puy is a historic winery in the Bordeaux region of France, recognized as a pioneer in biodynamic and natural winemaking. The Amoreau family has owned and farmed the property since 1610, resisting the use of chemical products and commercial trends for centuries. The estate has never used synthetic fertilizers or pesticides and was among the first in France to gain organic and biodynamic certifications. They maintain a balanced, self-sustaining ecosystem by preserving a significant portion of their land as forests and wild areas. The winery briefly gained international attention when its 2003 vintage was featured in the Japanese manga series The Drops of God. Following a dispute over appellation rules in 2017, the winery left the Francs Côtes de Bordeaux appellation and bottles its wine as "Vin de France" to maintain its traditional winemaking style.
