Produced from the organically farmed Acadia Vineyard in the Columbia Gorge, this pinot noir grows on high-elevation volcanic soils. Winemaker Graham Markel employs a hands-off approach in the cellar, letting wild yeasts dictate the character of the vintage. The winemaking utilizes a significant proportion of whole-cluster fermentation to add structural phenolics and manage fruit extraction. Maturing in neutral oak casks, it allows the volcanic terroir to express itself without wood interference.

It displays a translucent ruby hue, releasing a fresh bouquet of wild strawberries, red cherries, and savory dried herbs. On the palate, the light-to-medium body feels energetic and fluid, balancing red fruit flavors with a distinct tannic crunch. A bracing wave of mountain acidity cuts right through mid-palate volume, keeping it racy and refreshing. Subtle volcanic minerality integrates with the fine-grained tannins. It finishes completely dry, leaving a clean, mouthwatering trail of orange peel.

Graham Markel graduated from Naropa University's Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics and got a job at Antica Terra Winery in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. For seven years, he worked under Antica Terra’s Maggie Harrison and Hiyu Wine Farm’s Master Sommelier, Nate Ready. He learned many things from those two, but the number one thing I learned was to think deeply about winemaking and how to add beauty to every step of the process. No matter how arduous or tiring, every action must be taken to make the best wine possible. Living at Hiyu Wine Farm in Hood River opened my eyes to the many winemaking possibilities that were on offer in the Columbia Gorge.
