Named for the rugged, pine-studded plateau of the Pinole Hill Vineyard, this red wine showcases a cool-climate style of Oregon syrah. Winemaker Graham Markel utilizes low-intervention viticulture to handle the fruit, which benefits from high-altitude winds during a warm growing season. Spontaneous fermentation relies on native vineyard yeasts, incorporating a small whole-cluster component to manage structural phenolics. It ages in neutral oak barrels to emphasize the fruit profiles and site- freshness over wood manipulation.

It pours a dark ruby color, opening with savory aromas of black peppercorns, bacon fat, and dried lavender. On the palate, the medium-bodied frame is juicy and balancing crunchy red plum fruit with a stony, granitic texture. The tannins are gravelly and firm, providing a solid framework that avoids any jammy character. A snappy wave of natural acidity runs through mid-palate, keeping the mouthfeel thoroughly refreshed.

Graham Markel graduated from Naropa University's Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics and got a job at Antica Terra Winery in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. For seven years, he worked under Antica Terra’s Maggie Harrison and Hiyu Wine Farm’s Master Sommelier, Nate Ready. He learned many things from those two, but the number one thing I learned was to think deeply about winemaking and how to add beauty to every step of the process. No matter how arduous or tiring, every action must be taken to make the best wine possible. Living at Hiyu Wine Farm in Hood River opened my eyes to the many winemaking possibilities that were on offer in the Columbia Gorge.
