Grape: Gaglioppo
Vintage: 2020
Type: Red

Produced by Sergio Arcuri in the Cirò DOC of Calabria, this traditional red wine is made from hand-harvested Gaglioppo grapes. The fruit comes from mature, vertically trained vines grown on clay-limestone soils near the Ionian coast. Vinification utilizes native yeasts in open concrete tanks, adhering to fourth-generation family protocols without modern synthetic enhancements. It ages for several years in traditional cement vats, allowing the structural components to refine without any contact with oak wood.

It displays a bright garnet-ruby color, releasing classic aromatics of wild strawberry, sour cherry, leather, and dried Mediterranean spices. The palate is medium-bodied and texturally, balancing rustic charm with a sharp, refreshing baseline of natural acidity. Complex notes of roasted coffee bean and crushed stone emerge to complement the savory red fruit core. Firm, dusty tannins build a traditional framework that grounds the fluid mouthfeel. It finishes dry and clean, leaving a mouthwatering trail of salinity.

Sergio Arcuri is a small Calabrian producer working in Ciro, one of southern Italy's most historically important but often underestimated wine zones. The Arcuri family farms Gaglioppo and local white varieties close to the Ionian Sea, with old vines, organic methods and a direct connection to the region's ancient viticultural past. In the cellar the approach is traditional and unfussy, using native yeasts and minimal intervention to let the grape's firm tannin, sour cherry, herbs and iron-like minerality come through. The wines are honest, sunlit and savory, showing Calabria as a place of structure and culture rather than rustic anonymity.
