Grape: Furmint
Vintage: 2021

This dry white wine is a site-specific expression of Furmint harvested from estate rows rich in quartz rock. Winemaker Michael Wenzel handles the organic vines manually around the town of Rust to capture high mineral components. The grapes undergo a gentle manual pressing and ferment spontaneously with native vineyard wild yeasts inside neutral casks. The liquid matures on its fine fermentation lees for several months, completely avoiding modern mechanical adjustments or chemical clarifications.

It pours a clear straw-yellow color, releasing clean aromatics of fresh yellow apple, quince, and white blossoms. On the palate, a sleek, medium-bodied frame balances focused orchard fruit flavors with an underlying chiseled mineral spine. A lively wave of natural acidity cuts through the slightly waxy texture, maintaining excellent structural tension. Subtle layers of flinty reduction and wild herbs add a savory depth across the clean mouthfeel. It finishes long, bone-dry, and persistent.

Wenzel is Michael Wenzel's family estate in Rust, on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, where the family has been making wine for centuries. The domaine is especially important for its role in reviving Furmint in Austria: Michael's father Robert brought historic plant material back from Hungary in the 1980s, when the variety had nearly disappeared from Rust. Today Wenzel farms organically and works with Furmint, Blaufrankisch, Pinot Noir and other varieties in limestone, gneiss and quartz-influenced sites. The wines are spontaneous, minimally handled and quietly radical, linking Burgenland's present to a nearly lost Danube tradition.
