Price:$44.00

Grape: Fiano
Vintage: 2024
Type: White

Sourced exclusively from the high-altitude "906" parcel in Summonte, planted at over 650 meters elevation, this single-vineyard bottling represents Ciro Picariello's benchmark expression of Campania white wine. Rooted in steep, volcanic ash and clay-limestone soils, the hand-harvested fiano undergoes a long, temperature-controlled fermentation with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine ages on its fine lees for roughly 12 months with minimal intervention, bypassing oak entirely to preserve its laser-focused minerality and raw varietal character. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, this is a dense, high-acid white built for incredible purity and cellaring potential.

A bright straw-yellow color leads into complex aromas of smoky flint, green apple, hazelnut, lemon zest, and white flowers. On the palate, focused flavors of white peach, salt-cured citrus, crushed stone, and wild herbs unfold over a textured, medium-bodied frame. High, driving natural acidity cuts directly through the wine's rich leesy weight, providing remarkable vertical tension and energy. It finishes exceptionally long, bone-dry, and intensely saline, leaving a lasting impression of smoky volcanic ash and bitter grapefruit pith.

Winery

Ciro Picariello is based in Summonte, in the mountainous Irpinia area of Campania. His vineyards extend across hillside sites around Summonte, Montefredane and Pietradefusi, where elevations of roughly 400 to 720 meters and marked differences between day and night temperatures help preserve freshness. The soils combine clay and sandy marl with limestone sediment and conglomerates. Fiano is the estate’s signature grape, supported by other regional varieties including Greco, Aglianico and Falanghina.

Much of the white-wine work takes place in stainless steel, with lees contact building texture while keeping the grape and vineyard character clear. The Ciro 906 Fiano comes from a single Summonte vineyard first planted in 1992 and receives an extended period of maturation. Greco from Montefusco and red wines from Aglianico broaden the picture of Irpinia. Picariello’s importance lies in treating these local grapes with the seriousness and patience often reserved for more famous regions, producing wines whose depth is grounded in the cool inland hills of Campania.
