Grape: Verdejo
Vintage: 2023
Type: White

This white wine is crafted from organically farmed verdejo vines aged twenty to thirty years old in La Seca. The grapes grow on sandy soils packed with abundant river pebbles over a baseline of marl and limestone. The Cantalapiedra family destems and presses the fruit before splitting the native fermentation between stainless steel and neutral French oak barrels. Rested for twelve months on its lees before an unfiltered bottling, this cuvée captures an authentic regional character.

It pours a pale straw-yellow color, releasing aromas of stone fruit, yellow apple, and wild herbaceous notes. The palate is surprisingly dense and medium-bodied, balancing orchard fruit flavors with an underlying stony mineral core. A beautiful seam of natural acidity cuts right through the volume, keeping the fluid mouthfeel completely fresh. Subtle notes of grapefruit pith and raw almond add a savory depth to the mid-palate. It finishes dry, leaving a clean mineral trace.

Cantalapiedra Viticultores is located in La Seca, a village in the heart of Spain's Rueda appellation. The estate is run by father-and-son team Isaac and Manuel Cantalapiedra, with Manuel, a classically trained pianist, now leading the winemaking. They are a vanguard of minimal intervention winemaking in a region dominated by conventional producers. While Rueda is known for a consistent style of Verdejo, Cantalapiedra focuses on producing single-vineyard bottlings that highlight the unique differences in their terroirs. In the cellar, they use wild yeasts for fermentation and add minimal to no sulfur, relying on natural processes to express the character of their vineyards.
