This low-intervention red wine is an entry-level expression of the blaufränkisch grape produced by Roland Velich under his Moric estate. The fruit is sourced from younger vines aged between ten and fifty years old grown on limestone, primary rock, and loam terraces. The hand-harvested clusters are destemmed and undergo an open-vat spontaneous fermentation driven entirely by native wild vineyard yeasts. The final wine matures entirely in neutral steel and large wooden casks.

It pours a clear ruby color with purple reflections, opening with high-toned aromatics of blue fruits, spice, and black tea. On the palate, the medium-bodied frame is elegant and agile, focusing on an unmanipulated, fresh fruit presentation. Fine-grained, soft tannins provide a smooth structural grip that coordinates nicely across the fluid mouthfeel. A clean line of natural acidity cuts through the center, maintaining great freshness. It concludes with a dry, persistent finish.

Moric is Roland Velich's project in Burgenland, and one of the estates most responsible for restoring Blaufrankisch to serious conversation. Instead of treating the grape as a simple, fruit-driven red, Velich approached it with the sensitivity usually reserved for Burgundy: old vines, specific villages, restrained extraction and aging that emphasizes structure over gloss. The wines come from places such as Lutzmannsburg and Neckenmarkt, where limestone, schist and old vine material give Blaufrankisch depth, spice and nerve. Moric's best bottles are savory and transparent, proving that Austria's great red grape can be both intellectual and deeply pleasurable.
