Domaine Economou Crete Assyrtiko 2016: The Domaine Economou Assyrtiko 2016 is a masterful and unique expression of the Assyrtiko grape from Crete. The tasting note reveals a wine with a deep golden hue and an intense, evolving bouquet of dried yellow fruits, beeswax, and a distinct mineral and saline character. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, with a waxy texture and soaring acidity that provides a powerful counterpoint to its notes of honeyed fruit, toasted nuts, and savory herbs. The finish is long and persistent, showcasing a complex interplay of fruit, saltiness, and a subtle oxidative edge.This wine's vinification reflects a low-intervention, traditional approach. Grapes from old, own-rooted Assyrtiko vines are hand-harvested from the high-altitude Ziros plateau. The wine is fermented with native yeasts and undergoes extended aging in old oak barrels, where it is allowed to develop an oxidative character that sets it apart from the more common, fresh style of Assyrtiko. The wine is released when the winemaker, Yiannis Economou, deems it ready, often years after the vintage, which contributes to its incredible depth, complexity, and longevity.
Antonio Madeira Os Granitos 2021: The Antonio Madeira Os Granitos 2021 is a vibrant and elegant red from Portugal's Dão region. Sourced from a single vineyard with sandy decomposed granite soils, this wine displays a pure and intense nose with notes of red currants, wild herbs, and a distinctive stony minerality. The palate is fresh and balanced, with a taut acidity and silky, fine-grained tannins that lead to a long, mineral-driven finish. A complex wine that beautifully expresses its granite terroir.
