Montevertine Pian del Ciampolo 2023
MontevertineGrape: Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino
Vintage: 2023
Type: Red
Sourced from the estate's high-altitude vineyards in Radda in Chianti, this cuvée acts as the definitive introduction to Montevertine's cooler, limestone-rich terroir. The 2023 growing season offered a classic, slow ripening period that favored aromatic complexity and bright, lively fruit development. Fermentation takes place entirely in traditional concrete vats, with gentle maceration to prevent over-extraction of rustic tannins. The wine is then aged for twelve months in large Slavonian oak casks, a decision intended to soften the edges of the young Sangiovese while protecting its vibrant, unadorned varietal character. It stands as a beautifully approachable, energetic snapshot of a legendary estate.
In the glass, it shows a translucent, bright ruby hue with youthful purple reflections. The nose is incredibly fresh and inviting, bursting with notes of wild red cherry, pomegranate, red licorice, and a distinct hint of damp forest floor. On the palate, a crunchy, high-toned core of red-berried fruit is supported by a fine-grained, "crystalline" tannin structure that avoids any heavy astringency. A sweeping wave of cool-climate acidity cuts straight through the mid-palate, giving the wine an effortlessly fluid and athletic mouthfeel. The finish is remarkably clean, dry, and mouthwatering, leaving behind a subtle, savory trace of white pepper and crushed stone.
