Scar of the Sea SLO Pinot Noir 2024
Scar of the SeaGrape: Pinot Noir
Vintage: 2024
Type: Red
Focused on regenerative farming, Mikey and Gina Giugni craft this coastal Pinot to be a love letter to the Pacific. Mikey is an avid surfer, and his winemaking is dictated by the tides and sea breezes that cool his vineyards.
This wine is a blend of two of biodynamic Avila Beach vineyards - the Bassi Vineyard and the Casa Contenta Vineyard, along with the organically farmed Marfarm Vineyard from the Edna Valley, highlighting the range of the SLO Coast AVA.
This is a salty, bright, red-fruited Pinot with a distinct hibiscus and sea-breeze character that perfectly captures the cool-climate essence of San Luis Obispo. Because the sites are heavily influenced by the ocean, the fruit is picked early to maintain a "crunchy" acidity.
On the nose, it bursts with bright pomegranate, wild strawberries, and red plums, pinned down by a gorgeous "stem-y" perfume of white pepper, incense, and forest floor. The palate is silky, energetic, and highly aromatic, wrapping up with a distinctly saline, coastal crunch. At around 12.8% alcohol, this is a lithe, athletic red wine.
Scar of the Sea is the coastal California project of Mikey and Gina Giugni, focused on vineyards shaped by ocean influence, old vines and patient farming. Based on the Central Coast, the winery works with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Gamay and cider apples from sites in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and beyond. The name points to the Pacific's constant mark on the landscape: fog, wind, salt and cool light. Fermentations are native, extraction is gentle and the wines favor energy over weight. Scar of the Sea helped define a more transparent, maritime style for modern California wine.
