Grape: Zinfandel
Vintage: 2025
Type: Red

Sourced from the historic Lopez Vineyard in Cucamonga Valley, this low-intervention red wine showcases zinfandel from own-rooted, dry-farmed vines planted in 1918. Winemaker Mikey Giugni coaxes a lighter expression from the centenarian vines by utilizing fifty percent whole-cluster inclusion and a short, gentle maceration. Grown without irrigation on deep sandy soils, the fruit yields small quantities of concentrated, savory berries. Aged in neutral French oak barrels, this bottling focuses on transparent site expression over wood weight.

It shows a translucent, bright ruby hue, opening with a fragrant nose of wild bramble, cracked white pepper, hibiscus tea, and dry earth. On the palate, the whole-cluster stems provide a fine-grained structural frame that elevates the crunchy red berry fruit. Bracing, lively acidity cuts across the tongue, keeping the mid-palate fluid, light, and athletic. The texture remains supple across the core, completely avoiding heavy or jammy notes. It finishes dry, clean, and persistent.

Scar of the Sea is the coastal California project of Mikey and Gina Giugni, focused on vineyards shaped by ocean influence, old vines and patient farming. Based on the Central Coast, the winery works with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Gamay and cider apples from sites in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and beyond. The name points to the Pacific's constant mark on the landscape: fog, wind, salt and cool light. Fermentations are native, extraction is gentle and the wines favor energy over weight. Scar of the Sea helped define a more transparent, maritime style for modern California wine.
