Fabio Zambolin Feldo Coste della Sesia Rosso 2019
Fabio ZambolinGrape: Nebbiolo, Croatina, Vespolina
Vintage: 2019
Type: Red
This red wine comes from the Coste della Sesia appellation in Alto Piemonte, sourced from the oldest vineyard vines. Winemaker Fabio Zambolin crafts this cuvee in his grandparents' garage as a tribute to his grandfather, Feldo. The blend combines Nebbiolo, Croatina, and Vespolina, grown on sandy soils that protect the must's natural acidity. It ferments spontaneously with native yeasts and matures in old wood barrels or stainless steel vats without filtration.
It displays a light ruby hue, releasing clean aromatics of dried cherry, iron, wild herbs, and sweet anise. On the palate, a medium-bodied frame balances red fruit flavors with a taut, vertical line of mineral acidity. Clear flavors of cranberry and red currant fold into a subtle undertone of white pepper and clove. Fine-grained, integrated tannins provide a delicate grip across the fluid mouthfeel. It finishes dry and savory, leaving a persistent trail of stone.
Fabio Zambolin is a renowned "garagiste" winemaker in the Alto Piemonte region of Italy, known for crafting soulful, terroir-driven Nebbiolo from tiny, organically-farmed parcels. A former mechanic, he began his project in 2010 by transforming his grandparents' garage into a winery. Zambolin is committed to low-intervention, natural winemaking. He uses no herbicides or synthetic inputs in the vineyard, and his fermentations occur spontaneously with native yeasts. He uses old wood or steel for aging and avoids fining or filtration, relying on feel and instinct. The resulting wines are often described as elegant and honest, with a focus on capturing the purity of the site. They are typically lighter in color and feature notes of red cherry, iron, and herbs.
