Vietti Castiglione Barolo 2019
ViettiGrape: Nebbiolo
Vintage: 2019
Type: Red
This classic red wine is a pure varietal expression of Nebbiolo produced by the historic Vietti family in Castiglione Falletto. The fruit is hand-harvested from small certified organic vineyard plots scattered across the Barolo appellation, growing on complex limestone-marl soils. The grapes undergo a traditional native fermentation and an extended skin maceration inside neutral oak vats, avoiding modern chemical corrections. It undergoes a natural aging process, maturing for over two years in large neutral Slavonian oak casks.
It displays a clear garnet color, releasing complex aromas of red cherry, licorice, woodsmoke, and tar. The medium-bodied palate is deep and structured, pairing concentrated red currant fruit with a firm, assertive tannin backbone. Savory layers of iron, cedar, and dried rose petals unfold as the fluid mouthfeel develops across the tongue. A bracing line of alpine acidity cuts through the structural weight, maintaining great focus. It finishes long, bone-dry, and persistently clean.
Vietti is one of the great historic names of Piedmont, based in Castiglione Falletto and central to the modern understanding of Barolo crus. The Currado family helped pioneer single-vineyard bottlings such as Rocche di Castiglione, Brunate and Lazzarito, while also elevating Barbera, Dolcetto and Arneis at a time when those grapes were often treated casually. Today the estate balances tradition and precision, using long experience with Nebbiolo's tannin, perfume and site sensitivity. Vietti wines can be serious and ageworthy, but they also carry a distinctive elegance, showing Piedmont as both classical and vibrantly alive.
