Michel Gay et Fils Aloxe-Corton Vieilles Vignes 2018
Michel Gay et FilsGrape: Pinot Noir
Vintage: 2018
Type: Red
This classic red Burgundy wine comes from ancient Pinot Noir vines grown within the Aloxe-Corton appellation. The estate manages these old-vine plots manually on deep limestone and clay slopes to ensure optimal structural fruit concentration. Spontaneous fermentation relies entirely on native wild vineyard yeasts inside traditional neutral open tuns, completely avoiding commercial additives. The wine undergoes a natural maturation process, aging for several months in neutral French oak barriques to permit the tannins to resolve naturally.
It pour a clear ruby color, releasing a refined nose of fresh red berries, bramble fruit, and pomegranate. On the palate, a medium-bodied, well-structured frame showcases a harmonious balance of crunchy fruit and fine-grained, silky tannins. Savory layers of undergrowth and wild spices develop nicely as the fluid mouthfeel expands across the tongue. A clean thread of natural acidity cuts through the concentration, keeping it fresh. It finishes long, dry, and persistent.
Michel Gay et Fils is a family domaine in Chorey-les-Beaune, now led by Sebastien and Laurent Gay, the fourth generation of the family. The estate farms around Chorey and neighboring villages including Savigny-les-Beaune, Aloxe-Corton, Beaune and Corton, with Pinot Noir at the center of its identity. Sebastien modernized the work after joining in 2000, while Laurent brought enological precision when he returned in 2010. The wines have gained in finesse, with gentler extraction, careful oak and a focus on clean fruit, supple tannins and a clear reading of the often overlooked terroirs just outside Beaune.
